The Navgraha Puja is actually collective worship of all nine planets of the Vedic or Hindu Astrology. The Nine Planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu) are believed to control our deeds (Karmas), desires, and the results or outcomes of the same.
Navgraha Puja is done to remove all negative effects of the nine Grahas, to improve the quality of your personal and professional life, to gain showers of blessings of the Navagrahas or the nine planets, to keep away bad luck and misfortune, and to attain salvation or Moksha.
Indian saints and sages were the first in the world to attain spiritual knowledge and the truths of the universe. The navgraha- Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Brishaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu with their position and revolution of Sun find a description in the most ancient scriptures of the world the ved and puraan.
The science of astrology began with the knowledge of Indian sages about the universe. How the planets are placed in one's horoscope at the time of birth determines the good and bad effects of one’s life and the time of their effect. In every horoscope, some planets are well placed and some are badly placed. Hence we go through success and failures, happiness and sorrows in various aspects of life in different time slots in varying degrees. Certain planetary conflagrations give rise to strong negative effects called “Doshas”. The Vedic scriptures and astrology scriptures prescribe various pooja’s to ward off the negative influence of the planets and to improve the benefic effects.
The simplest way to do Nava Graha puja is to chant 9 times each mantra of every graha and once in a month, you can take the wood of 9 Graha separately which is easily available in the market which also has a tag over it depicting to which planet it belongs. You can do small havan (homa) with cow’s ghee, use cow dung cake break into two pieces burn it on gas when it gets smokeless and red place it in whatever homa utensils you have. Give nine offerings of cow ghee to every graha along with chanting mantra for each graha. Please offer the wood dipped in cows ghee after chanting 9 times for a particular graha.
