Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati
The Kamakhya temple that is situated in Guwahati at Nilachal hills is one of the best Durga
temples of the country that celebrates the festival with much pomp and joy and in a grand manner.
It is also said to be one of the oldest temples that has at least 10 deities within the complex.
Being the oldest Shakti Peethas, it is said that Sati’s genitals fell at this very spot where the
temple stands now. Apart from Navratri and Durag pooja, the Ambubachi Mela is also celebrated here.
It is an annual festival where menstruation of the Goddess is observed. Navratri is the time when this
temple sees a lot of devotees and a structure of the temple called Garbgriha symbolizes the uterus.
The Kamakhya temple has been renovated many times in the 17th century and today it stands tall and beautiful.

To reach this temple, you can take buses that are available from Guwahati and also Dispur.
These buses will take you directly to the temple since it is a very popular temple.
The nearest railway station is the Kamakhya Railway junction and it is also the second biggest
railway station and hence the trains are regular and pretty frequent. And for flight the nearest
airport is the Gopinath Bordoli Airport which is located at 14 km from the main city. Delhi and
Kolkata regularly has flights that go to Dispur.
